Irish Wildman also known as the Woodwose Wudewasa or Wodwos, is a creature reported to live in the forests of Ireland, it may be connected in ancient and modern mythology to the Grogoch, Gruagach, the Puca or The Pooka. It is unconfirmed if there are any connections, although some themes between the varieties do look similar to some. They all include a creature covered in hair, but there are differences in depictions.
Tales go back to Medieval times and beyond and even got the attention of famous Writers such as Seamus Heaney. The origins of these tales in Ireland can also be linked to the Fomor or Fomorians, tales of giants roaming the island. Indeed Ireland is rich in its mythology on giants of all shapes and sizes and its only a modern interpretation that the Bigfoot tag gets attached to these myths. What connects it, are the tales of the European and Medieval Wildman or Wudewasa. If we look into the many variants listed in Irish Mythology, Medieval Mythology surrounding giants and Wildmen, we see a lot of similarities. Its possible that all of these variations, are simply differing opinions of different people across Europe and the British Isles. |
